Amarillo Youth Choirs

Amarillo Youth Choirs, Inc. is celebrating its twenty-second season. Under the direction of Artistic Director, Jerry Perales, the "Concert Choirs" have been nationally and internationally recognized, and continue to earn performance trophies and travel to various exciting destinations every year. The Amarillo Youth Choirs, a non-profit organization, originated in the fall of 1989 after an overwhelming response to an Amarillo College Continuing Education summer workshop.

Dr. Dale Roller, former chairman of the Music Department at Amarillo College, was instrumental in the formation of the first Amarillo Boy Choir under the direction of Mr. Billy Talley. Following Mr. Talley, Mr. Greg Shapley conducted the Boy Choir from 1991 to 1996. And our current Artistic Director, Mr. Jerry Perales has been leading the choirs since 1996.

The choir membership consisted of boys with unchanged voices from Amarillo and the Panhandle area. In 1993 the Amarillo Boy Preparatory Choir was added. The Amarillo Girl Concert Choir was established for the fall of 2001 and the Amarillo Girl Preparatory Choir for the fall of 2002.

Membership is by audition only, based not only on musical ability but also on the desire to learn and perform. Membership acceptance is at the discretion of the artistic director. The Amarillo Youth Choirs, Inc. is dedicated to the purpose of teaching boys and girls the joys of vocal music in a friendly, disciplined, and encouraging environment.
